Have you ever walked into an office and immediately felt a “buzz” in the air? The energy is high, the team is focused, and there is a sense of collective momentum. Conversely, we’ve all walked into rooms where the atmosphere felt heavy, sluggish, or even toxic.
As a leader, it is easy to fall into the trap of being a thermometer. You walk in, gauge the “temperature” of the room, and simply react to it. If the team is down, you feel down. If they are stressed, you absorb that stress. But true leadership requires you to be the thermostat. You don’t just measure the temperature; you set it.
Ownership Over the Atmosphere
The most common mistake leaders make is waiting for the “vibe” to improve before they start leading. In reality, the team is waiting on you. If you show up with “Eeyore” energy, you are giving your team permission to do the same.
Being a thermostat doesn’t mean faking a smile when things are falling apart. Authenticity is your greatest tool. If you aren’t at 100%, own it. Tell your team: “I’m facing some personal challenges today, but I’m here to focus and get the work done, and I expect the same from you.” That level of honesty builds a bridge of trust while maintaining a standard of excellence.
Strategies to Shift the Energy
If your team’s energy is stagnant, you need to “pour gasoline” on the right fires. Here are three ways to shift the room:
- Create a Longer Runway: Don’t roll out of bed and rush into your first meeting. Successful leaders use their mornings for prayer, reading, or journaling. By the time you hit the office, your “internal thermostat” is already set.
- Share the Wins: Teams want to win. When energy is low, point to a recent success. Tracking and highlighting small victories provides the momentum needed to tackle larger obstacles.
- Leverage Your “Energy Bringers”: Every team has that one person who is naturally enthusiastic. Don’t squash that. Play along with their energy, and use their natural spark to help ignite the rest of the group.
The Ripple Effect
Your internal peace eventually overflows into your external environment. By protecting your own passion and being intentional about how you show up, you create a culture where momentum is sustainable.
Are you simply reflecting the mood of your office, or are you changing it?
Until next time, make today GREAT!
