Great Leaders Create More Leaders

In leadership, it’s not enough to simply be great at what you do. True success is found in your successors—those you raise up to lead alongside or beyond you. Great leaders don’t cling to control. They create leaders.

The best leaders I’ve known are always working to develop the people around them. They empower others to take ownership, embrace responsibility, and grow into new roles. Leadership, at its core, is not about holding power. It’s about sharing it wisely.

From Resistance to Results: A Real-World Turnaround

I once coached a leader who was hesitant to develop her team. She feared that if she gave away too much responsibility, she might become dispensable. But once she realized that developing others actually made her more valuable to the organization, everything changed.

She began delegating and mentoring, creating space for her team to lead. The results were incredible. She became one of the most effective people developers I’ve ever worked with. Her shift in mindset didn’t just benefit her. It made the entire organization stronger.

How to Start Creating Leaders on Your Team

  1. Invite Them In: Let others shadow you. Teach them not just what to do, but how you think through decisions.
  2. Progressively Empower: Use the method: I do/you watch → I do/you help → you do/I help → you do/I watch. It’s simple, but transformational.
  3. Be Present, Not Controlling: Once someone’s ready to lead, don’t micromanage. But don’t disappear either. Regular check-ins show support and build confidence.

What Holds Leaders Back?

The biggest mistake? Not delegating. Too many leaders believe it’s faster to just do everything themselves. In reality, that mindset caps growth. Both theirs and their team’s.

Worried about perfection? Let go of the idea that someone needs to do it 100% your way. If they can do it 70% as well to start, that’s a win. With guidance, they’ll soon outperform your expectations.

Why This Mindset Matters Now More Than Ever

Change moves fast. No leader can carry it all. Building leadership depth is not just a nice-to-have. It is a strategic necessity. It boosts morale, increases capacity, and allows your organization to serve at a higher level.

Until next time, make today GREAT!

P.S. If you’re ready to take your leadership to the next level, start investing in others. The legacy of great leaders is not in what they build alone, but in who they build up.
