In today’s fast-paced business world, leaders are often swept up in a cycle of constant activity—emails, meetings, decisions, and demands. But the most effective leaders aren’t just busy; they’re intentional. One of the most transformative habits a leader can adopt is daily reflection.
Trading the Treadmill for Intentional Time
There was a time when I would stay up late and wake up scrambling—rushing into my day without a moment to gather my thoughts. It felt like I was jumping out of bed and straight onto a treadmill going 100 mph. Eventually, I realized this approach was unsustainable. I made the tough but necessary shift to become an early riser.
Now, I start most days between 5 and 6 AM. I get dressed for the day, then spend quiet time in my home office reading Scripture, journaling prayers, and soaking up leadership and personal development content. In that calm, quiet space, I not only find peace—I find purpose.
The Ripple Effects of Reflection
This simple, consistent practice has changed my life. It’s made me a more patient and present husband, father, and leader. I no longer carry the same sense of daily stress because I begin my day with clarity and intention. Most importantly, I’ve become more strategic. Reflection helps me focus not just on what’s urgent, but on what truly matters.
Making It Work for You
Daily reflection isn’t easy for most leaders because it requires stillness, discipline, and intentionality—three things often missing in our hustle culture. But if everything else gets scheduled, why not this?
As John Maxwell said, “The secret of your success is determined by your daily agenda.” I believe that if it’s important enough to be on your to-do list, it should be important enough to go on your calendar. Whether it’s journaling, prayer, reading, or simply sitting in silence, find what works for you—and make it personal and desirable.
Final Thought
In a world that constantly demands your attention, giving yourself even 30 minutes of stillness can be your leadership superpower. Daily reflection isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for high-impact leaders.
