Use Technology Without Letting It Use You

By May 18, 2025 No Comments

In today’s digital world, it’s easy to feel like technology is running the show. With new apps and platforms launching daily, many professionals find themselves reacting instead of leading. But here’s the truth: technology should serve your goals—not the other way around. When I launched my coaching business in 2015, I made a decision: I would learn to use technology intentionally, not be overwhelmed by it.

From Website Rookie to AI Explorer

My journey began with simple but essential tools: a basic WordPress website and Mailchimp as my email service provider. These were my digital foundations—tools that allowed me to promote my business and communicate consistently with my audience.

As the tech landscape evolved, I evolved with it. I began experimenting with newer platforms like Kit and dove into the world of AI with tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Each time, I evaluated tools not for their hype, but for how well they could enhance my workflow and support my clients.

Filtering the Noise

One of the smartest things I did was follow tech-savvy professionals who test and review tools in-depth. Their insights helped me avoid shiny-object syndrome and focus on technology that truly aligned with my needs.

Still, I’ve learned that more tech isn’t always better. I’ve walked away from tools that were overly complex or didn’t add enough value. Platforms with steep learning curves or too many bells and whistles often ended up in the discard pile. Simplicity and clarity always win.

Advice to Fellow Professionals

Don’t adopt tech just because an “expert” says you should. Start by asking, “What do I need to improve or simplify in my business or job?” Then go looking for tools that directly meet that need. Let technology be the servant—not the master.

You don’t need to become a tech wizard overnight. But you do need to stay curious and intentional. The right tools can elevate your impact and streamline your operations. The key is using technology with purpose, not pressure.

If this resonated with you, share it with a colleague who might be feeling tech fatigue. For more leadership and business growth tips, visit www.mcclurecoaching.com and discover how I help leaders simplify, focus, and thrive.
